Energy Cost Per Prompt
The energy cost of using ChatGPT is estimated at 3 Wh per command (Utrecht University). The unit watt-hour (Wh) is not often used in everyday life. Kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit that you see more often, for example on electricity bills. 3 Wh corresponds to 0.003 kWh. To get a sense of how much this is: it is the same amount of energy used by a 60W light bulb that is on for 3 minutes, or a microwave oven that is used for 12 seconds at 900W.
